Range Rover Air Suspension Problems: Causes, Symptoms and Diagnosis

The air suspension system used in Range Rover models plays an important role in controlling vehicle ride height and adapting to different driving conditions. If one corner of the vehicle drops while parked, the vehicle takes too long to rise, the compressor runs for extended periods or a suspension warning appears on the dashboard, these may be signs of a Range Rover air suspension problem that requires inspection.

These symptoms do not necessarily mean that the same component has failed in every case. Air springs, the compressor, valve blocks, height sensors, air lines, electrical connections and battery voltage should be evaluated together. At our Anil Oto service center in Maslak, Istanbul, the diagnostic process is planned according to the vehicle model, model year, stored fault records and physical inspection results.

How Does Range Rover Air Suspension Work?

Air springs, used instead of or alongside conventional coil springs depending on the system, adjust the vehicle's ride height according to air pressure within the suspension system. The compressor generates the required air pressure, the valve block directs air to the appropriate air springs, and height sensors report the vehicle's position to the control module.

When the system is operating normally, the vehicle can maintain its level according to load and move between specific ride heights depending on the selected driving mode. An air leak, mechanical wear, electrical interruption or incorrect sensor data can affect vehicle height or cause the system to enter a protection mode.

Why Does a Range Rover Drop on One Side?

If one corner or one axle of the vehicle drops after it has been parked, this may indicate a loss of air pressure within the system. However, the side that has dropped should not automatically be assumed to identify the failed component. A valve block or air line connection affecting air distribution can produce similar symptoms.

Some of the main areas that may need to be inspected include:

• Cracks, deterioration or leaks in an air spring

• Damaged, cracked or leaking air lines and connections

• Pressure loss through the front or rear valve block

• Mechanical or electrical problems with a height sensor

• Incorrect suspension system calibration

• A compressor that is unable to generate sufficient pressure

Recording how quickly the vehicle drops and which side is affected can help with diagnosis. For example, it is useful to know whether the vehicle begins to lower within a few hours or only after being parked overnight.

What Should Be Checked If the Vehicle Takes Too Long to Rise?

If the vehicle takes an unusually long time to reach its normal ride height after the engine is started, or changing the selected suspension height takes longer than expected, the system may be struggling to generate the required pressure. Compressor wear is one possible cause, but it is not the only possibility.

If there is an air leak in the system, the compressor may need to run more frequently and for longer periods to replace the lost pressure. Over time, this can place additional strain on the compressor. Moisture accumulation in the dryer, relay or fuse problems and low voltage can also affect system operation.

Is It Normal for the Air Suspension Compressor to Run Continuously?

It can be normal for the air suspension compressor to operate briefly while adjusting the vehicle's ride height. However, if it runs for an extended period every time the vehicle is started, frequently restarts or becomes noticeably louder than usual, the system should be inspected.

A compressor does not always run excessively because the compressor itself has failed. An air leak, incorrect height information or improper pressure distribution can also force the compressor to operate more frequently. Replacing only the compressor without checking the rest of the system may place unnecessary stress on the replacement component.

What Does a “Suspension Fault” Warning Mean?

A “Suspension Fault”, “Normal Height Only” or similar dashboard message indicates that the control module has detected an abnormal condition within the system. The exact message and vehicle behavior may vary depending on the model.

If a suspension warning appears, noting the following information can make diagnosis easier:

• Whether the warning appears immediately after starting the vehicle or while driving

• Whether the vehicle's ride height changes

• Whether the compressor can be heard operating

• Whether the warning disappears after switching the ignition off and back on

• Whether the problem occurs in cold, hot or wet weather

A warning disappearing temporarily does not necessarily mean that the problem has been resolved. Historic or intermittent fault records may remain stored in the vehicle's control modules.

Why Is a Computerized Diagnostic Scan Not Enough on Its Own?

Diagnostic equipment can help identify stored fault codes, height sensor data and certain pressure-related information. However, a fault code does not always directly identify the component that needs to be replaced. The conditions under which the code was recorded should be evaluated together with the physical symptoms of the suspension system.

In addition to computerized diagnostics, the following checks may be required:

• Comparing the ride height at all four corners of the vehicle

• Checking the system for air leaks using appropriate methods

• Evaluating compressor operating time and pressure generation

• Inspecting valve blocks and air lines

• Checking sensor connections and live data

• Testing the battery, charging system, relays and fuses

For more information about computerized diagnostics, visit our Land Rover electromechanical and diagnostic inspection page.

Can Low Battery Voltage Cause a Suspension Warning?

On modern Land Rover and Range Rover models, low battery voltage can cause warnings to appear across several electronic systems. Because the air suspension compressor creates a significant electrical load, a weak battery, charging system problem or excessive resistance in an electrical connection can affect suspension operation.

For this reason, if several warnings appear after the vehicle has been parked for an extended period, the inspection should not focus exclusively on suspension components. Battery condition and alternator charging voltage should also be checked.

What Are the Symptoms of a Failing Air Spring?

Air springs can develop leaks over time due to age, operating conditions, dirt, moisture and deterioration of their flexible rubber surfaces. Small cracks around the folding section of an air spring may become noticeable at certain ride heights while being less obvious at others.

Possible symptoms include:

• One corner of the vehicle dropping while parked

• Uneven vehicle ride height

• The compressor operating more frequently than usual

• Knocking noises or reduced comfort over uneven surfaces

• The vehicle being unable to complete a ride-height adjustment

Similar symptoms can also be caused by problems with shock absorbers, bushings, sensors or valve blocks. The source of the air leak or fault should therefore be confirmed before replacing components.

Can You Drive a Range Rover When the Suspension Has Dropped?

If the vehicle is noticeably lower than normal, the distance between the tires and body has been significantly reduced or the suspension has become unusually stiff, continuing to drive may not be safe. Vehicle handling, braking balance, tires and undercarriage components may all be affected.

The color and wording of the dashboard warning, current ride height and vehicle behavior should all be considered. If the vehicle cannot reach a safe driving height, it is advisable to avoid forcing the system and seek technical assistance.

How Should Air Suspension Repairs Be Planned?

A suspension warning does not automatically mean that the entire system needs to be replaced. The repair plan should be based on the location of any leaks, the overall condition of the components, stored fault records and the vehicle's operating conditions.

In some cases, a single air line or connection problem may be repaired, while components of a similar age and condition may need to be evaluated together. Replacement parts should be checked for compatibility with the vehicle model, model year and VIN. System calibration and a road test are also important parts of the repair process.

How Can You Help Extend the Life of the Air Suspension System?

Not every air suspension problem can be prevented, but paying attention to early symptoms can help reduce the risk of more extensive repairs.

• Do not ignore small changes in vehicle ride height

• Have the system inspected if compressor operating time or noise changes

• Do not simply clear a suspension warning and continue driving without investigation

• Include air springs, air lines and connections in undercarriage inspections

• Include battery and charging system checks in regular maintenance

• Ensure appropriate calibration and a road test are carried out after repairs
