Post-Holiday Land Rover Maintenance: Essential Checks
Long-distance driving during a summer holiday, high temperatures, heavy traffic and changing road conditions can place greater stress on many vehicle systems compared with normal city driving. After returning from a holiday, carrying out a few essential checks on your Land Rover can help identify developing problems at an early stage.
Why Is a Post-Holiday Land Rover Inspection Important?
Long-distance driving does not automatically mean that your vehicle requires maintenance. However, after a holiday involving significant mileage, it can be beneficial to inspect key areas such as the tires, brakes, fluid levels, suspension and undercarriage.
If the vehicle was driven on rough roads, unpaved surfaces or extensively on highways and intercity routes during the holiday, these checks may become even more important.
1. Check the Engine Oil and Fluid Levels
After a long trip, the engine oil level should be checked together with the coolant level and other fluids applicable to the specific vehicle model.
If a noticeable decrease in any fluid level is detected after long-distance driving, it is important to investigate the cause rather than simply topping up the fluid.
2. Inspect the Tires
Long-distance driving, high temperatures and different road surfaces can affect the condition of the tires.
• Tire pressures
• Tread depth and overall wear
• Uneven tire wear
• Cuts, cracks or signs of impact damage
• Spare tire or emergency tire equipment
should be checked.
Uneven tire wear may not necessarily be caused by the tires themselves. It can also indicate that the wheel alignment, suspension or related components require inspection.
3. Have the Brake System Checked
During a long journey, heavy traffic, frequent braking and driving on steep routes can place greater demands on the braking system.
If you notice unusual noises, vibration or a different feeling through the steering wheel or brake pedal while braking, the brake pads, brake discs and related systems should be inspected.
4. Pay Attention to the Suspension and Undercarriage
Driving over rough roads, potholes or unpaved surfaces during a holiday can affect suspension and undercarriage components.
If you hear knocking or rattling noises that were not present before the trip, notice a change in steering behavior or feel the vehicle pulling to one side, an inspection may be beneficial.
5. Do Not Ignore the Cooling System
High summer temperatures and prolonged vehicle use increase the importance of a properly operating engine cooling system.
If you have noticed a decrease in coolant level, fluid underneath the vehicle, unusual changes in engine temperature or an overheating warning, the cooling system should be inspected.
For more information about overheating problems, read our Range Rover overheating guide.
6. Check the Condition of the Filters
The condition of the air filter and cabin filter may need to be checked, particularly if the vehicle has been driven extensively in dusty areas or heavy traffic.
If the vehicle is approaching its scheduled maintenance interval, the engine oil and filter replacement requirements should also be evaluated according to its maintenance history.
Watch for These Signs After a Long Trip
• A new or unusual noise has appeared
• Steering or driving behavior has changed
• There is vibration or noise while braking
• The vehicle pulls to one side
• One or more fluid levels continue to decrease
• A new dashboard warning has appeared
• You notice oil or another fluid underneath the vehicle
If you notice any of these symptoms, having the vehicle inspected before the problem becomes more serious may help prevent further issues.
