Maintenance Guide for Land Rover Vehicles Over 5 Years Old
As a vehicle gets older, age-related wear becomes increasingly important alongside mileage. Rubber hoses, seals, belts, bushings, plastic cooling system components and electrical connections can deteriorate over time even on vehicles with relatively low mileage. Frequent short-distance city driving, long periods of inactivity, heavy traffic, off-road use and regularly carrying heavy loads can also affect maintenance requirements.
When preparing a maintenance plan for a Land Rover over five years old, the following information should be considered:
• Vehicle model, model year, engine specification and VIN
• Previous maintenance and repair invoices
• Records of oil, filter, belt, hose and fluid replacements
• Previously recorded fault codes
• Daily driving conditions and annual mileage
• Any noises, vibrations, leaks or warnings noticed by the driver
Which Systems Should Be Checked During Periodic Maintenance?
Engine oil and filter replacement is a fundamental part of periodic maintenance, but it should not be the only consideration. Depending on the vehicle model and operating conditions, the following systems and components may also need to be included in the maintenance plan:
• Engine oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter and fuel filter
• Coolant level, condition and possible leaks
• Radiator and turbocharger hoses
• Auxiliary drive belt, tensioner and idler pulleys
• Brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid
• Suspension, bushings, control arms and steering links
• Battery, alternator and electrical connections
• Transmission, transfer case and differential leaks
Maintenance intervals may vary according to the vehicle model and engine specification. General maintenance lists found online should not be treated as a definitive maintenance schedule without first considering the vehicle's VIN and technical history.
Why Is Computerized Diagnostic Inspection Important?
The absence of a warning light on the dashboard does not necessarily mean that there are no fault records stored in the vehicle's control modules. Some faults may occur intermittently, may be recorded without being noticed by the driver or may only return under specific operating conditions.
During a diagnostic inspection, stored information from systems including the engine, transmission, suspension, braking system and body electronics can be examined. However, reading a fault code alone is not sufficient to determine that a component should be replaced. The conditions under which the code occurred, live vehicle data, physical inspection results and, when necessary, a road test should be evaluated together.

Why Is the Cooling System Critical as a Land Rover Gets Older?
Radiator hoses, the expansion tank, thermostat, water pump and connecting components can deteriorate over time. Repeated coolant loss, dried coolant residue around connections or unusual changes in engine temperature should be investigated.
Simply adding coolant may provide only a temporary solution. Continuing to drive without identifying the source of a leak can potentially lead to more expensive engine problems. Cooling system inspection is particularly important before long-distance journeys and driving in high temperatures.
Air Suspension and Undercarriage Inspection
On models such as the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and certain Discovery variants, the air suspension system may begin to show age- or usage-related symptoms. The vehicle leaning to one side while parked, taking longer than usual to reach the correct ride height, frequent compressor operation or a suspension warning appearing on the display may require a more detailed inspection.
The undercarriage inspection should include shock absorbers, air springs, control arms, bushings, steering links and mounting components. Noises over uneven roads, steering play or uneven tire wear should be evaluated as part of the complete suspension system rather than automatically being attributed to a single component.
