Land Rover Dashboard Warning Lights: What Do They Mean?
Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles may display dashboard warnings related to various systems, including the engine, oil pressure, brakes, battery, suspension and tire pressure. However, not every dashboard light has the same meaning or level of urgency. Some indicators simply show that a system is active, while certain Land Rover warning lights may require the vehicle to be stopped safely and inspected.
The name, symbol, color and recommended action associated with a warning light may vary depending on the vehicle model, model year and equipment specification. For this reason, the dashboard message should always be considered together with the owner's manual for the specific vehicle. At our Anil Oto service center in Maslak, Istanbul, the source of a warning can be investigated using computerized diagnostics and the necessary mechanical inspections.
What Do Dashboard Warning Light Colors Mean?
The colors used on a Land Rover dashboard provide a general indication of how the driver should respond to a warning. However, a final diagnosis should never be made based on color alone.
Red warnings: These may indicate a priority issue related to safety or the mechanical condition of the vehicle. When conditions allow, the vehicle should be stopped in a safe location, the dashboard message should be read and the instructions in the owner's manual should be followed.
Yellow or amber warnings: These may indicate that a system requires inspection or that a particular function may be operating with limitations. Even if the vehicle appears to be operating normally, the warning should not be ignored for an extended period.
Green, blue or white indicators: These generally indicate that a function such as the headlights, cruise control, terrain response system or a driver assistance feature is active or ready. Not all of these indicators represent a fault.
According to official Land Rover iGuide information, red warning categories include systems such as oil pressure, engine temperature, brakes and battery charging, while amber warnings may include engine management, ABS, airbags and tire pressure. The owner's manual for the specific model and model year should always be used for the exact meaning of each warning.
Red Oil Pressure Warning Light
A red oil pressure warning may indicate that the engine lubrication system is not maintaining the required oil pressure. This does not necessarily mean that the engine oil level is simply low. The oil pump, filter, sensor or another part of the lubrication system may also need to be inspected.
If the red oil pressure warning appears while driving, the vehicle should be stopped safely and the engine should be switched off. It should not be assumed that adding engine oil alone will solve the problem. The vehicle should be inspected according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Red Engine Temperature Warning
An engine temperature warning may indicate that the cooling system temperature has risen above the normal operating range. Possible causes can include low coolant level, radiator fan problems, thermostat failure, water pump issues, damaged hoses or coolant leaks.
If this warning appears, the vehicle should be stopped in a safe location and the engine should be allowed to cool. Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap while the engine is hot. If the coolant level is decreasing, the source of the coolant loss should be identified rather than simply topping up the system.
Red Battery or Charging System Warning
A red battery warning symbol may indicate a problem with the vehicle's charging system. The cause may not necessarily be the battery itself. The alternator, drive belt, cables, electrical connections or charging control system may also be responsible.
If the charging system is not operating correctly, the vehicle may eventually lose electrical power. If the warning remains illuminated while driving, unnecessary electrical consumers should be switched off and the vehicle should be taken for inspection safely.
Red Brake System Warning
On some Land Rover models, a red brake warning light may indicate that the parking brake is engaged. If the warning remains illuminated after the parking brake has been fully released, there may be an issue with the brake fluid level, electronic parking brake or another part of the braking system.
If the warning is accompanied by a soft brake pedal, reduced braking performance, unusual noises or another brake-related message, the vehicle should not continue to be driven and professional assistance should be obtained.
Amber Engine Warning Light
An amber engine warning light may indicate that a fault has been recorded in the engine management, fuel, ignition, emissions, air intake or sensor systems. It is not possible to determine which component has failed simply by looking at the warning light.
If the vehicle also experiences loss of power, vibration, rough running, smoke or unusual noises, driving should be limited and the vehicle should be inspected as soon as possible. Replacing a sensor or another component without first reading the fault codes may result in unnecessary repair costs.
Amber ABS Warning Light
An ABS warning may indicate that the anti-lock braking system has been disabled or that a fault has been recorded. The conventional braking system may continue to operate, but ABS assistance may not be available during emergency braking.
Possible causes can include a wheel speed sensor, sensor ring, electrical connections, low battery voltage or the ABS control system. If the ABS warning appears together with a red brake warning, the situation should be treated with greater priority.
Amber Tire Pressure Warning
The tire pressure warning may illuminate because one or more tires have lost pressure or because there is a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system. The vehicle should be stopped safely and the tires should be visually inspected for obvious damage, cuts or significant pressure loss.
If the warning remains illuminated after the tire pressures have been adjusted to the values specified for the vehicle, the sensors or monitoring system may require inspection. Tire pressure should not be increased randomly simply to switch off the warning light.
Air Suspension Warning
On air-suspension-equipped models such as the Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, a warning message may appear if there is a problem with the vehicle height system. Possible causes can include the compressor, height sensors, valve block, air springs, electrical connections or low system voltage.
If the vehicle is leaning to one side, cannot reach its normal ride height or displays a suspension movement restricted message, the system should be inspected rather than repeatedly attempting to raise and lower the vehicle.

Diesel Particulate Filter and AdBlue Warnings
Some diesel Land Rover models may display warnings related to the diesel particulate filter or diesel exhaust fluid system. The color of the warning and the message displayed on the instrument panel are important when determining the appropriate action.
Not every diesel particulate filter warning can be resolved simply by driving the vehicle for a longer distance. If the warning repeatedly returns, vehicle performance decreases or additional engine warnings appear, the system should be inspected using diagnostic equipment.
If a Warning Light Turns Off by Itself, Is the Problem Gone?
Some faults are intermittent and may only occur under specific temperature, speed, voltage or driving conditions. A warning light turning off by itself does not necessarily mean that there is no longer a problem. A fault code may remain stored in the vehicle's control module as a historic or intermittent fault.
If the warning occurs repeatedly, taking a photo of the warning light, noting the dashboard message and recording the driving conditions under which it appeared can help with the diagnostic process.
What Information Should You Provide When Contacting a Service Center?
When requesting an initial assessment of a dashboard warning, providing the following information can help with diagnosis:
• A clear photo of the warning light and dashboard message
• Vehicle model, model year and engine specification
• VIN/chassis number, if available
• Whether the warning is constant or intermittent
• Any unusual noises, vibrations or loss of performance occurring with the warning
• Whether the warning appears during a cold start or while driving
