Freelander 8: Features, Tests & Turkey Release

Freelander 8 is one of the most closely watched next-generation SUVs in the automotive world. The Freelander name, once an important part of the Land Rover model range, is now being revived with an entirely different structure, technology and positioning.

Developed through the collaboration between JLR and Chery, the new Freelander 8 combines an electrified powertrain, all-wheel-drive technology, advanced suspension systems and serious off-road capability, making it significantly different from the Freelander models we have known in the past.

So, what exactly is the Freelander 8, how closely is it connected to Land Rover, what are its technical specifications, and when could it arrive in Turkey?

What Is the Freelander 8?

Freelander 8 is the first production SUV of the revived Freelander brand developed through the collaboration between JLR and Chery.

There is an important distinction to make here. Freelander was previously a model name directly within the Land Rover range. The first Land Rover Freelander was introduced in 1997, followed later by the Freelander 2.

In this new era, however, the Freelander name no longer refers simply to a Land Rover model. Freelander is being repositioned as a separate brand owned by JLR and developed in cooperation with Chery.

Therefore, it would not be accurate to describe the new Freelander 8 simply as a “Freelander 3” or as a new Land Rover model.

Is the New Freelander 8 a Land Rover?

Because of the Freelander name's long history with Land Rover, this is naturally one of the most frequently asked questions about the new model.

The new Freelander 8 is not part of the current Land Rover model families such as Defender, Discovery or Range Rover. Instead, it is being developed under the Freelander brand owned by JLR.

What makes the project particularly interesting from an automotive perspective is the combination of two different engineering worlds. JLR contributes to the project through its design expertise and brand heritage, while Chery plays an important role in areas including next-generation electric and hybrid vehicle technology, engineering and manufacturing infrastructure.

Although the Freelander 8 therefore has a connection to previous Freelander models through its name and heritage, its technical architecture belongs to an entirely new generation of vehicles.

Freelander 8 Engine and Technical Specifications

There are considerably different power and range figures for the Freelander 8 circulating online. The main reason is that the vehicle developed for the Chinese market and the international version use different powertrain configurations.

The Freelander 8 offered in China uses an EREV, or extended-range electric vehicle, powertrain. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine operates as a range extender, while electric motors are positioned at the front and rear axles.

Key figures announced for the Chinese version include:

• Up to 610 kW system output

• Approximately 818 hp maximum power

• 813 Nm maximum torque

• Dual-motor all-wheel drive

• 60.3 kWh battery

• Up to 310 km of electric range under the CLTC standard

• Approximately 4.6 seconds from 0-100 km/h

• 800-volt electrical architecture

The Freelander 8 developed for international markets, however, uses a different powertrain.

The Global Freelander 8 Is More Relevant for Turkiye

For Turkey, the version to watch is the international Freelander 8 rather than the EREV model currently offered in China.

In the first Middle East specification announced for international markets, the vehicle combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a plug-in hybrid system.

Key specifications announced for this version include:

• 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid engine

• 34.12 kWh LFP battery

• Dual-electric-motor all-wheel drive

• Up to 460 kW maximum system output

• 662 Nm maximum torque

• Up to 110 km of electric driving range

• Up to 886 km of total driving range

• Approximately 5.8 seconds from 0-100 km/h

It is important to note that these figures apply to the first international specification announced for the Middle East. The engine, battery, power output and equipment of the European-homologated Freelander 8 may differ.

What Suspension Does the Freelander 8 Use?

One of the most interesting aspects of the new Freelander 8 is its suspension and chassis technology.

The vehicle uses a double-wishbone suspension layout at the front and an independent multi-link arrangement at the rear.

Depending on the version, the vehicle can also be equipped with dual-chamber air suspension and electronically controlled adaptive dampers.

Rear-wheel steering technology is designed to improve manoeuvrability, particularly at lower speeds, despite the Freelander 8's relatively large dimensions.

With its air suspension system, the international model is reported to offer a maximum ground clearance of approximately 266 mm.

How Capable Is the Freelander 8 Off-Road?

The Freelander 8 has not been developed purely as a large luxury SUV for urban use. Off-road capability has also played an important role in the vehicle's development programme.

The international model features an Intelligent All-Terrain System. Depending on the surface and driving conditions, the system can coordinate the electronic traction systems, throttle response, suspension and other vehicle functions.

During development, the vehicle has been tested in a range of demanding off-road conditions, including cross-axle situations, steep gradients, mud, sand and water crossings.

The Freelander 8 is reported to offer a maximum wading depth of up to 900 mm, while maximum ground clearance can reach approximately 266 mm.

These figures demonstrate that off-road capability has been taken seriously during the development of the Freelander 8.

How Did the Freelander 8 Perform in Testing?

One of the most notable aspects of the new Freelander's development programme is the extensive durability testing carried out before its international launch.

According to information released by the manufacturer, more than 1,000 test vehicles were used during the development and validation process. More than 200 of these vehicles were dedicated specifically to demanding off-road durability testing.

The combined testing distance of the off-road development vehicles is reported to have exceeded 2.15 million kilometres.

During different stages of development, the Freelander 8 was tested under a wide variety of conditions, including:

• Extreme heat

• Low temperatures

• Sand and desert conditions

• Mud

• Rocky terrain

• Heavy rain

• Water crossings

• Steep gradients

• High-altitude environments

These tests are particularly important for validating systems such as the new hybrid powertrain, battery thermal management, all-wheel-drive system and electronically controlled suspension under different climatic and road conditions.

What Is the Freelander 8 Interior Like?

The interior of the new Freelander 8 follows a completely different philosophy from previous Freelander models.

The new model places a strong emphasis on digital displays, an advanced infotainment system, an AI-powered voice assistant and modern driver-assistance technologies.

Depending on the specification, equipment can include a 46.3-inch panoramic digital display, a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen, a rear-seat entertainment system and advanced comfort seats.

The Freelander 8 is also planned to be offered internationally in both five-seat and three-row six-seat configurations.

When Will the Freelander 8 Arrive in Turkey?

As of 29 October 2026, no official launch date has been announced for the Freelander 8 in Turkey.

Freelander's announced international expansion strategy consists of several stages.

The first stage focuses on the United Arab Emirates, the wider Middle East and other left-hand-drive markets. Sales in the United Arab Emirates are expected to begin during the first quarter of 2027.

Later stages include right-hand-drive markets such as Australia and New Zealand, followed by an expansion into continental Europe.

At present, no official distributor, pricing, engine specification or sales launch date has been announced for Turkey. Therefore, it would be premature to state that the Freelander 8 will definitely arrive in Turkey in 2027.

The key development for the Turkish market will be the introduction of the European-homologated Freelander 8. Once the European specifications and sales strategy are announced, the possibility of a Turkish launch should become clearer.

Which Freelander 8 Could Come to Turkey?

If the Freelander 8 is officially introduced in Turkey, the European-homologated international hybrid version is more relevant to watch than the 1.5-litre EREV currently offered in China.

However, it has not yet been confirmed that the European model will use exactly the same specification as the current Middle East version.

European emissions standards, homologation requirements, battery options and individual market conditions could result in changes to the vehicle's technical specifications.

The Freelander Name Is Back, but the Vehicle Has Completely Changed

Rather than being a direct successor to the classic Land Rover Freelander, the Freelander 8 represents a complete reinterpretation of the Freelander name for a new generation of electrified and hybrid vehicles.

With its powerful hybrid system, electronic all-wheel drive, air suspension, adaptive dampers, advanced terrain management and digital technologies, the new model is technically very different from previous Freelander generations.

For Turkey, however, the most important question remains unanswered: when will the European version of the Freelander 8 be introduced, and will Turkey be included in its international sales programme?

At Anıl Oto, we continue to closely follow the Freelander 8 and other developments across the Land Rover world, including new models, hybrid systems, emerging vehicle technologies and technical innovations.
